Active List

1. What is a Well? Phase 1

  • Release: Phase 1 was released to members in January 2009, and updated in June 2009.
  • Chair: Chaired by sponsor steering committee
  • Objectives: This workgroup focused on creating a set of typical well configuration diagrams and baseline definitions that identify, illustrate, and define the important components of wells. From this starting point, industry experts have worked with regulatory agencies to determine how they describe and define well components; this information ha been compared with the baselines. The material developed by this workgroup will be valuable to data managers, land administrators, well data administrators, geologists, analysts and managers (www.WhatIsAWell.org).
  • Status: Phase one is complete and available to members. Portions of this will be available to the general public in the near future.

2. What is a Well? Phase 2

  • Release: Phase 2 is complete and available at http://www.WhatIsAWell.org
  • Chair: Chaired by sponsor steering committee
  • Objectives: The regulatory focus of Phase 2 extends the baseline comparison from Phase 1 of the 'What is a Well?' initiative to include additional regulatory agencies, including international agencies. In mid 2010, 30 agencies have been reviewed. This workgroup also defined and developed an industry standard set of well status classifications. What we refer to as well status and classification are essentially different ways of describing wells so that people can find the right well or set of wells for specific business activities.
  • Status: This workgroup is complete.

3. Business Rules

  • Release: This workgroup will be launched in 2009, with early deliverables in late 2009 or early 2010.
  • Chair: Chaired by sponsor steering committee
  • Objectives: This workgroup will develop a mechanism to collect, validate and distribute industry standard business and data rules that can be used by anyone to improve their data management practices. Service providers will be encouraged to adopt the industry set of rules, and to contribute to the community knowledge base.
  • Status: Project is underway.

  • Chair: Bob Davis, Woodside: Dianne Edwards, Geoscience Australia
  • Objectives: This Workgroup has developed data model specifications that will support organic geochemistry analysis from sample collection and preparation to the technical results created during the study. Data loading and quality management are supported through table structures that store reference lists.
  • Status: A detailed model proposal has been created and is being integrated into PPDM 3.9 draft.

  • Status: Charter developed and approved, workgroup funding is solicited.

Proposed Workgroups

Some of these workgroups have been active in the past and may be revitalized when circumstances warrant it. Others have been the subject of member requests and discussions, or a recommendation by another workgroup.

1. Data Management

  • Target Release: PPDM 3.8 and above
  • Chair: Vacant
  • Objectives: The PPDM Data Management Workgroup has and will continue to investigate issues raised by industry and develop recommendations for best practices, to enrich the data model and deliverables and provide a forum for discussion and process improvements.
  • Status: In PPDM 3.8, the Workgroup submitted recommendations for improvements to the data management module that support mappings, quality control, business rules, metrics reporting and more. New Workgroups are being spun off this group to support specific needs, such as best practices and business rules.

2. Data Content Project

  • Chair: Vacant
  • Objectives: To continue the process of identifying or creating standard reference lists for PPDM users. Upcoming phases may work towards the creation of industry wide values, mappings between regulatory value sets, processes for creating and validating reference lists, and methods for publication and adoption.
  • Status: Workgroup needs funding to proceed.

3. Improved Docs & Sample Data

  • Chair: Vacant
  • Objectives: To examine current model documentation, make recommendations for improvements and obtain the necessary resources to implement recommendations. An improved sample data set will also be the outcome of the Teapot Dome project, but could include other data types (such as marine data) as needed.
  • Status: Documentation has been moved to the PPDM Wiki. Funding is needed to continue the project.
  • See PPDM Relational Models for online documentation

4. Map PPDM & XML Standards

  • Chair: Vacant
  • Objectives: To review the PPDM model and Energistics XML schema (PRODML and WITSML) and identify opportunities to persist data in PPDM. Mappings may exist at a high level for subject matter, and at a detailed level for implementations. Opportunities to support both standards will be examined.
  • Status: At the discussion stage.

5. Teapot Dome Dataset

  • Target Release: Phase 1 to coincide with PPDM 3.8
  • Chairs: Wes Baird, Devon: Kim Kelln, Io Software
  • Objectives: To use the Teapot Dome sample data set to create a demonstration implementation of PPDM 3.8. This dataset will ultimately be used as a focus for discussions about best practices, and as a tool for education classes. The dataset will also be available to members as a sample dataset for vendor demonstrations or for testing purposes.
  • Status: Phase 1, including well headers, production volumes, basic land rights, and documents, will be loaded into PPDM 3.8. Phase 2 will include logs, texts, seismic and possibly cores; this phase is not complete. Phase 3 may require the digitization of numerous paper documents stored at the RMOTC facility, but will support a very complete suite of data types.
